Floating Littoral Zone (FLOLIZ): A solution to sustain macroinvertebrate communities in regulated lakes?

چکیده

Artificial water-level fluctuations (WLF) seriously threaten the biodiversity and functioning of littoral zones in lake ecosystems. The use artificial floating islands (AFI) to compensate for deleterious effects WLF on habitats has been increasing interest environmental managers. Yet, ecological efficiency this solution is still very poorly documented. AFI are usually designed as simple vegetated mats. In study, we an Floating Littoral Zone (FLOLIZ), which mimics a natural zone composed terrestrial section with helophytes several underwater levels containing soil hydrophytes. Next, aimed assess effectiveness FLOLIZ supporting macroinvertebrate communities. Three FLOLIZs were installed three bays French hydroelectric reservoir marked by high WLF. Taxonomic functional metrics communities compared control stations over four seasons one year. cumulated abundance, taxonomic richness diversity significantly higher than stations, particularly when water level rose abruptly (i.e., spring) during post-drawdown season summer). Functional profiles differed between stations. More specifically, dominated highly mobile resistant taxa (e.g., Beetles, Bugs, Chironomids), while less species longer life cycles Hydra sp., Oligochaeta). These findings show that more successfully colonized original, diversified, abundant respect preliminary results suggest could provide suitable, biogenic macroinvertebrates reservoirs exhibiting Longer term monitoring, including other compartments fish), additional evidence mitigate aquatic biodiversity.

Environmental Factors and Aquatic Macrophytes in the Littoral Zone of Regulated Lakes

Water level regulation for purposes of hydropower production has caused notable changes in the littoral zones of regulated lakes in northern Finland. Marked geomorphological changes have taken place in the lakes with a raised water level. Lowering of the ice cover during the winter has also caused rapid changes in the littoral. Changes in the environmental conditions and aquatic macrophyte comm...

Functional Changes in Littoral Macroinvertebrate Communities in Response to Watershed-Level Anthropogenic Stress

Watershed-scale anthropogenic stressors have profound effects on aquatic communities. Although several functional traits of stream macroinvertebrates change predictably in response to land development and urbanization, little is known about macroinvertebrate functional responses in lakes. We assessed functional community structure, functional diversity (Rao's quadratic entropy) and voltinism in...

Abundance and diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities in lakes exposed to Chernobyl-derived ionising radiation.

Littoral (lake shore) macroinvertebrate communities were studied in eight natural lakes affected by fallout from the Chernobyl accident. The lakes spanned a range in (137)Cs contamination from 100 to 15500 kBq m(-2) and estimated external dose rates ranged from 0.13 to 30.7 μGy h(-1). General linear models were used to assess whether abundance of individuals, taxon richness, Berger-Parker domin...

Tourists increase the contribution of autochthonous carbon to littoral zone food webs in oligotrophic dune lakes

Tourists can adversely influence the ecology of oligotrophic lakes by increasing algal production via direct nutrient inputs and/or re-suspension of sediments. To assess the influence of tourists on food web dynamics, we used natural abundance stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to calculate the relative importance of autochthonous and allochthonous carbon sources to littoral zone food webs ...

Convergence of fish communities from the littoral zone of reservoirs

1. Understanding factors that regulate the assembly of communities is a main focus of ecology. Human-engineered habitats, such as reservoirs, may provide insight into these assembly processes because they represent novel habitats that are subjected to colonization by fishes from the surrounding river basin or transported by humans. By contrasting community similarity within and among reservoirs...
